Sometimes I wonder what I would do with all my free time if I answered client questions the way people ask them: short, blunt and stripped of all logic.
You’d get the truth but you wouldn’t like it.
Here’s how that would sound:
- Client: I don’t want to pay any tax. What can I do? Me: Stop working.
- Client: How do I get the best deductions? Me: Spend more money.
- Client: Should I buy the property in my name, a company or a trust? Me: Yes.
- Client: What’s the fastest way to pay off my mortgage? Me: Already be wealthy.
- Client: Can I reduce my GST bill? Me: Yes, sell less.
And this is exactly why I do not stick to short answers.
I give you the long version. The one that explains why, covers the “what ifs” and saves you from stepping on landmines you did not even know were there.
That is why my emails sometimes read like essays. That is why phone calls last longer than you planned. And yes that is why the bill looks the way it does.
Because the alternative of the short answer version, would cost you a lot more in the long run…
