We Clean, We Light And We Feast. Then What?

Posted on October 26, 2025 by Suresh Rajani

Every festival everywhere follows the same template. We clean, we light, we feast and we post a few photos that prove we are doing life right. Depending on the reason, the region or the religion, the decorations change and the food looks different but the script rarely does.

It is meant to be a reset, a pause and a reminder to start again. If you are lucky, for a few days it almost feels that way. The noise fades, the lights glow, the house looks clean and the world looks slightly better than it did last week. But give it a week and you realise nothing much has changed. You are still the same person, carrying the same thoughts, replaying the same worries and chasing the same peace you were looking for before it all began.

You cleaned, you lighted and you feasted on the outside but the inside stayed exactly as it was. The real mess was never in the living room but it is in the mind  stacked with open tabs you never close, old worries, bad habits, recycled arguments, etc. The kind of clutter that does not make noise but never leaves either.

We light up everything around us but walk around half asleep ourselves. Maybe what needs lighting up is not our balconies but the part of us that has not felt inspired in months. We feed everyone around us but forget to feed the bit inside that has been starving. The soul that has been craving curiosity, creativity and spark. Feed that with travel, reading, writing, dancing or simply with time away from anything that is not a social media update.

And small businesses are no different. Every year begins with the same promises that this year we will do it right. No more dodgy deals, no more shortcuts, proper records, super paid on time, quotes done properly, numbers reviewed instead of guessed, etc. But it never lasts long as the old habits sneak back in, the temporary shortcuts continue and the same excuses show up dressed as a hack or a master plan. The outside looks organised but the inside is the same.

So when the lights fade and the noise settles, maybe that is when the real festival begins. Not the one where you hang lanterns and share sweets but the one where you stop pretending to reset and actually do it. Clean the mind, light the inside and feed the part of you that still wants to do things right.

We celebrate the rituals but often miss the message i.e. the real reset was never about what you cleaned, lit, or ate. It was always about you cutting the old nonsense… Or at least trying to…
